Expertise courses
Introductory or refresher course on keeping venomous animals
A one-day course in which important basics of the safe keeping and handling of venomous snakes (including spiders and scorpions if required) are taught under expert supervision.
We offer two different courses depending on previous experience:
- Introductory course: For participants with no previous knowledge or experience with venomous animals who would like to “get a taste” of the subject for the first time.
- Refresher course: For participants with previous experience who would like to deepen their existing knowledge in a structured and practice-orientated way.
Both courses do NOT legally qualify you to keep venomous animals!
To obtain a certificate of competence, successful participation in the DGHT/VDA or World of Poisons competence course is required.

Course "DGHT Expertise Course §2 German Animal Welfare Act"
This one-day basic course is generally designed for pet owners in the field of terraristics, with a focus on reptiles and amphibians, in order to train and certify their knowledge of animal and species-appropriate animal husbandry. The course concludes with a final examination and the award of a certificate. It can only be certified upon successful completion of the exam.
The certificate serves as documented proof of expertise to the authorities or when purchasing animals protected under WA I. This certificate of expertise can also be used as positive proof of in-depth interest and expertise in the event of an inspection by the competent regional authorities.
Price: 75€ for DGHT / VDA members, 100€ for non-members
Please note: This course does not qualify you to keep venomous animals!

Course "DGHT Dangerous Animal Expertise Course"
The prerequisite for admission to the dangerous animal training course is at least certified expertise in accordance with §2 (private keeping) or §11 German Animal Protection Act (commercial keeping) or equivalent proof, as the dangerous animal training course itself builds on the basics of general expertise in terraristics.
This course is offered specifically for German applicants.
Your regional authority will ultimately decide whether the course is recognised for the purpose of approving the keeping of your pet. Please enquire there in advance. The regulations on dangerous animals are defined differently at state, federal state and local authority level.
The Dangerous Animal Expertise Book is relevant for training and examinations and can be ordered via the DGHT / VDA online shop. The course lasts between two and three days with a subsequent examination and covers the topic of venomous snakes/venomous lizards at the “World of Poisons” and includes theoretical and practical components. The book serves as preparation for the course.
The following areas of expertise are covered in the course:
- Legal aspects
- Husbandry and safety measures
- Relevant animal anatomy, biology and physiology
- Handling and (veterinary) care
- First aid and emergency plan
This is followed by an examination and, if successfully completed, the certificate is awarded.
Price: 550€ for DGHT / VDA members, 650€ for non-members

Expertise Course: Certified "WdG - Venomous Animals Course"
This two-day course, specially organised by the World of Poisons, is aimed at Austrian and international interested parties. German participants are referred to the DGHT / VDA course.
In theoretical and practical exercises, the most important aspects of safe keeping and handling, veterinary treatment, first aid and general legal principles concerning venomous animals are addressed, taking into account the individual interests of the participants. After successfully passing the examination, you will receive a certificate of attendance to confirm your newly acquired expertise.
The certificate serves as documented proof of your expertise to the authorities. Please contact your local authority in advance to find out about the regional regulations and recognition of the course, as these may be defined differently at state, federal state and local authority level.
